The hidden shortfall between new spending and new taxes was revealed just after Supreme Court justices grilled the law’s supporters about its compliance with the Constitution’s limits on government activity. Obama bests Romney by double digits in new poll CNN: President Barack Obama holds a double-digit lead over GOP presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in hypothetical general election matchups, according to a new poll. And a CNN/ORC International survey released Wednesday also indicates that the president’s approval rating has inched over the 50% mark in CNN surveys for the first time since last May, when the polls were still registering the after effects of the death of Osama bin Laden. The number of Americans who say the economy’s in good shape has jumped 13 points since January, though the survey shows a majority still think it is in poor shape. If the general election were held today instead of in early November, 54% of registered voters say they would back Obama, with 43% supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the front-runner in the GOP nomination battle. That’s up from a five-point 51%-46% advantage the president held over Romney in February. And Obama would have a 55%-42% lead over Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania who’s Romney’s main rival right now for the nomination. The president led Santorum by a seven-point 52%-45% margin last month. “President Obama currently wins majority support among groups that have been problematic for him in the past, including men, older voters, and suburbanites,” says CNN Poling Director Keating Holland. “He has a solid lead among independents as well.” The president’s approval rating has been yo-yoing above and below 50% for several months, but this is one of the first surveys that shows Obama with a double digit lead over Romney. The timing seems to fit. Rep. Ryan wrapped up his Presidential Trust Duties today. The House just passed his budget. And with the Wisconsin primary right around the corner on Tuesday, Ryan’s endorsement could be doubly effective.

What is more, coming on the heels of Sen. Marco Rubio’s endorsement Wednesday night and President George H.W. Bush’s endorsement Thursday, this would be yet another example of the Republican old guard — and the up-and-coming conservative establishment — coalescing around Romney as the inevitable nominee.

Update: BuzzFeed reports that Ryan “has communicated to former Senator Rick Santorum that he will endorse Mitt Romney, according to a source familiar with the conversation.”

Additionally, the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin writes “I have no doubt Rep.Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will soon endorse Mitt Romney.”

Update: A second source says to expect Ryan’s endorsement to come as early as Friday morning.

WASHINGTON — You don’t often hear an American president secretly (he thinks)
assuring foreign leaders that concessions are coming their way, but they must wait
because he’s seeking re-election and he dare not tell his own people.
Not at all, spun a White House aide in major gaffe-control mode. The president was
merely explaining that arms control is too complicated to be dealt with in a year in
which Russia and the U.S. hold presidential elections.
Rubbish. First of all, to speak of Russian elections in the same breath as ours is a
travesty. Theirs was a rigged, predetermined farce. Putin ruled before. Putin rules
after.
Obama spoke of the difficulties of the Russian presidential “transition.” What
transition? It’s a joke. It had no effect on Putin’s ability to negotiate anything.
As for the U.S. election, the problem is not that the issue is too complicated but that if
people knew Obama’s intentions of “flexibly” caving on missile defenses, they might
think twice about giving him a second term.
After all, what is Obama doing negotiating on missile defense in the first place? We
have no obligation to do so. The ABM Treaty, a relic of the Cold War, died in 2002.
We have an unmatched technological lead in this area. It’s a priceless strategic
advantage. Why give any of it away? In order to placate Putin, Obama had already in
2009 abruptly canceled the missile-defense system the Poles and Czechs had agreed to
host in defiance of Russian threats. Why give away more?
It’s unfathomable. In trying to clean up the gaffe, Obama emphasized how intent he is
to “reduce nuclear stockpiles” and “reduce reliance on nuclear weapons.” In which
case, he should want to augment missile defenses, not weaken, dismantle or bargain

defenses. If your professed goal is nuclear disarmament, as is Obama’s, eliminating
defenses is completely illogical.
Nonetheless, Obama is telling the Russians not to worry, that once past “my last
election” and no longer subject to any electoral accountability, he’ll show “more
flexibility” on missile defense. It’s yet another accommodation to advance his
cherished Russia “reset” policy.
Why? Hasn’t reset been failure enough?
On which of “all these issues” — Syria, Iran, Eastern Europe, Georgia, human rights —
is Obama ready to offer Putin yet more flexibility as soon as he gets past his last
election? Where else will he show U.S. adversaries more flexibility? Yet more aid to
North Korea? More weakening of tough Senate sanctions against Iran?

Can you imagine the kind of pressure a re-elected Obama will put on Israel, the kind of
anxiety he will induce from Georgia to the Persian Gulf, the nervousness among our
most loyal East European friends who, having already once been left out on a limb by
Obama, are now wondering what new flexibility Obama will show Putin — the man
who famously proclaimed that the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe” of the 20th
century was Russia’s loss of its Soviet empire.
They don’t know. We don’t know. We didn’t even know this was coming — until the
mic was left open. Only Putin was to know. “I will transmit this information to
Vladimir,” Medvedev assured Obama.
Added Medvedev: “I stand with you.” A nice endorsement from Putin’s puppet, enough

The Buffalo Sabres entered a hostile environment in Washington Tuesday, but left unscathed and better off in a 5-1 win over the Capitals, moving them into sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference while also controlling the Caps’ playoff hopes.

At a Congressional forum on the Hill yesterday at which killed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin’s parents were asked to testify, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) took center stage. She claimed first that Martin had been victimized by racial profiling and a “botched police investigation.” But she went even further: George Zimmerman, the shooter in the case, she said, should be arrested “immediately for his own safety.”

An Israeli boxing student of mine, Yuri, says that Romney is an extremist and that he hates him. He is so ill-informed that he doesn’t realize that Romney is a moderate. Host Charlie Rose asked Dean, a physician and former Democratic presidential candidate, if he thought the individual mandate would ultimately be declared unconstitutional.

“I actually think that’s what they’re most likely to do before, of course, we’ve heard any arguments,” Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, replied. “I can’t imagine how they’re going to decide this isn’t right yet. And you’ll have lawyers talking about the arcane legal question. But yeah, I don’t believe they’ll support that. And they certainly aren’t going to do it from the bench today.”

“I do believe that it’s likely the individual mandate will be declared unconstitutional,” he continued. “[Justice Anthony] Kennedy will probably side with the four right-wing justices. But I’d be very surprised if they — I think Kennedy will switch sides and it will be 5-4 in favor of severing that finding from the rest of the bill. The question is going to be, is this individual mandate question — can that be considered separately from the rest of the bill? And I think it will be.”

While he admitted his expertise was in medicine and not in legal matters, Dean also predicted that the portion of the legislation that expands Medicaid would be kept intact by the high court. He added that Obamacare could likely survive without the mandate portion.

“I’m not a lawyer,” Dean said. “As you know, I’m a physician. So I don’t speak about the constitutionality of the individual mandate. But it’s definitely not necessary for the bill to succeed. It was mainly put in by academics who built the program for Gov. [Mitt] Romney in Massachusetts — they had did it there — and for insurance companies who will benefit from extra customers. But the truth is that the number of so-called free riders, people who will refuse to get insurance until they get sick, is going to be very, very small.

Dean then argued, “It would have been easier for them not to include an individual mandate in the first place because mandates make people mad.”
