The Obama administration clearly hoped that the Department of Justice’s Inspector General report on Operation Fast and Furious would be the last word on the scandal. which has been tied to hundreds of deaths in Mexico and the murders of two American law-enforcement officials. However, a new report from Univision to be broadcast tomorrow, previewed here by ABC News, may put the issue back on the front pages.
Sharyl Attkisson at CBS News reminds us that the Obama administration is still hiding Kevin O’Reilly, a key figure in Operation Fast and Furious:
O’Reilly, then a White House National Security staffer, had phone and email exchanges about Fast and Furious from July 2010 to Feb. 2011 with the lead ATF official on the case: ATF Special Agent in Charge Bill Newell. Just days after Newell testified to Congress on July 26, 2011 that he’d shared information with O’Reilly, whom he described as a long time friend, O’Reilly was transferred to Iraq and not available for questioning. Thereafter, he declined interviews with congressional investigators and the IG.
In a letter sent to O’Reilly’s attorney Thursday, Issa and Grassley state that O’Reilly’s “sudden transfer” to Iraq took him out of pocket in their investigation, and placed him in a position that had already been given to somebody else, raising “serious questions about O’Reilly’s assignment in Baghdad (and) the motivation for his transfer there.” …
“Given that O’Reilly was the link connecting the White House to the scandal, and that the President subsequently asserted executive privilege over the documents pertaining to Fast and Furious, it is imperative that the American people get to the bottom of O’Reilly’s involvement with Fast and Furious,” says the letter to O’Reilly’s attorney.
It goes on to say that if O’Reilly does not agree to an interview within 30 days, congressional Republicans will have no choice but to “use compulsory process” or subpoena power to require his testimony.
One source called Univision’s findings the “holy grail” that Congressional investigators have been seeking:
Often lost amid the rancor in Washington are the stories of dozens of people killed by guns that flowed south as part of the undercover operation, and later slipped out of view from U.S. officials. Univision’s Investigative Unit (Univision Investiga) has identified massacres committed using guns from the ATF operation, including the killing of 16 young people attending a party in a residential area of Ciudad Juárez in January of 2010.
The guns didn’t stop in Mexico, either:
Additional guns, previously unreported by congressional investigators, found their way into the hands of drug traffickers across Latin America in countries such as, Honduras and Colombia, as well as the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. A person familiar with the recent congressional hearings called Univision’s findings “the holy grail” that Congress had been searching for.
The Daily Caller also reports on Univision’s findings and the impact they may have on the scandal:

FREDERICKSBURG — A 92 percent drop in absentee-ballot requests by military personnel in Virginia is raising concerns that the Pentagon is failing to carry out a federal voting law.
With only 1,746 military voters in Virginia requesting absentee ballots so far this year — out of 126,251 service members in the state —the Military Voter Protection Project says the system has broken down.
And it’s not just in the Old Dominion. MVPP Executive Director Eric Eversole reports significant declines in absentee-ballot requests by service members across the nation.
Compiling data from Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, Ohio, Alaska, Colorado and Nevada, Eversole’s organization found that military families have requested 55,510 absentee ballots so far this year. That’s a sharp decline from the 166,252 sought in those states in 2008.

The wheels appear to be coming off a two week attempt by the Obama Administration to cover up its fatal security failures at our consulate in Libya and to cover up the very fact that this was a successful pre-planned terrorist attack that cost four American lives, including that of our Libyan Ambassador, Christopher Stevens.Not only has the scandal picked up steam in the mainstream press (Jake Tapper’s ABC News report tonight ), but high-ranking members of the President’s own party are now demanding answers. The lawmakers are also demanding to know whether the administration had any advance warnings of the Libyan attack and, if so, whether it had shared that information with U.S. personnel on the ground. I keep hearing a lot of moaning at the bar from the right wing; most notably from Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard. It seems like every time I see this guy, whom I refer to as “The Wincer” because he always looks like he thinks he’s about to be slugged, he’s going off on Mitt Romney. No matter what Romney says or does, Kristol and a few of his fellow ivory tower pinheads can’t wait to dissect it, as if they’re performing the world’s longest autopsy.
I have no idea why Kristol has been so hard on Romney. Perhaps he felt that Mitt should have been calling on him for advice, sort of like those guys in the cartoons who are always showing up on mountaintops to ask the shaman for the secret of the universe, only to be told it’s strawberry ice cream.
But, heck, I wanted to be a speechwriter for Romney and I managed to swallow my disappointment when the call didn’t come. Kristol should do the same and quit grumbling, or I’m going to give him something to wince about.

Why standup for values? It only means that ‘benefits’ may be lost. Better to sell out one’s values and faith in order to get free stuff from the government. What color is the sky in the political media’s world? Each week this month has begun with some variation of “Romney is doomed.” We’ve had rabid amplification of Romney “gaffes” interspersed with the traditional “campaign infighting” stories. There has also been a dash of trolling for anonymous quotes from “GOP strategists” wringing their hands and predicting defeat in the Fall.
Meanwhile, Obama floats from one disaster to another with barely a mention in the press.Let’s take a moment to recount a few items plaguing the Obama Administration this month alone:
Economy. The month began with another dismal jobs report. The economy only created a very anemic 96k jobs in August, far below what’s needed to keep pace with population growth. Almost 400k gave up looking for work and left the labor force, which sunk to its lowest level in 30 years.
A host of companies lowered earnings guidance for the next quarter. Most concerning were dramatically lower expectations for economic bellwethers FedEx and Norfolk Southern. These are consistent with the sharp turndowns in manufacturing. The economy is simply going to get worse over the next month.
All of this puts a lie to Obama’s claims that the economy is recovering. It was about a year ago, as every economy coming out of recession does, but it isn’t now. On current trends, we are likely heading into another recession.
Fed Action. Ben Bernanke essentially threw up his hands this month, saying “what the hell” and announcing their intention to just keep printing money until the economy comes around. This 3rd round of Quantitative Easing isn’t likely to be any more effective than the first two rounds. Eventually there will be a tidal wave of inflation. The Fed’s hubris is that precisely right before inflation fully kicks in, they will be able to stave it off with interest rate hikes. Of course, that will create its own pain unless growth has become very robust. Regardless, the Fed move is explicit confirmation that the economy is faltering.
Foreign Policy. The spiking of the football over the death of bin Laden is soooo last year. The muslim world has erupted in protests against the West in response to the actions of the Obama Administration. Our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were assassinated in a terrorist attack. An attack we were warned about but did nothing to prevent. In response, Obama has embarked on a massive apology campaign over an amateurish video that had next to nothing to do with any of the protests other than serving as a convenient pretext.
Almost worse, the Obama Administration has been caught blatantly lying about the events surrounding the assassinations in Libya. Our UN Ambassador went on the Sunday shows and said there was absolutely no advance warning of the attack. She also claimed it wasn’t really an attack, but a spontaneous protest that unfortunately turned violent. The Administration now admits that everything she said was wrong.
This, though, is perhaps the most damning indictment: Obama learned of the attacks in Libya soon after they began. He then proceeded to decisively…go to bed.
Afghanistan. Obama campaigned in 2008 on a promise to implement a new “surge” strategy in Afghanistan that would see the US to a clear victory. The last of those “surge” troops left Afghanistan this month, with the US position worse than it was 4 years ago. Last week, in a modern day Tet Offensive, Taliban fighters attacked the main allied base, killing several Americans and destroying 6 (!) fighter jets.
The Obama Administration’s chief strategy in Afghanistan has been to build up an Afghan security force. The US worked with these forces tactically to try to defeat the Taliban. Those efforts are over, however, after several incidents when these security forces, our supposed Allies, murdered several Americans. We will now simply limp out of the country. Not since the 70s has American liked this powerless.
Fast and Furious. Last week, the DOJ’s Inspector General released its “investigation” of the Fast and Furious scandal. The reports improbable conclusion was that virtually everyone at DOJ knew about the disastrous program except Eric Holder. An appropriate fall guy has been found within DOJ, but the stench lingers. The IG report also reveals that the White House actively declined to cooperate with the investigation.
Campaign. While the media trained every gun in their arsenal against Mitt Romney, Obama lost his convention bounce. A week after the Democrat convention, Obama had enjoyed a 5-6 bounce in his support. Despite the covering fire from the media, that bounce is gone. Obama and Romney are tied in polls from AP and Rasmussen. Obama clings to a 2 point lead among registered voters in the latest Gallup tracking poll. Setting aside some ridiculously skewed national and swing state media polls, the race is tied.
At this point in the campaign in 2008, the McCain campaign was essentially broke and off the air in several key swing states. This year, however, Romney has a big cash advantage over Obama and is set to unload an ad barrage in all the swing states. The very fact that Democrat strongholds like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Michigan are even considered at least somewhat competitive this year underscores Obama’s vulnerabilities.
Up to this point, Obama has spent $200 million to disqualify Romney from the Presidency. He has benefited from an enormous in-kind contribution from the media seeking to do the same. Yet, the race is where it was before Obama’s ad barrage. And now, Romney’s ad barrage will begin. September will probably be remembered as the Obama campaign’s high-water mark.
Keep in mind, the items above are just the highlights of the problems plaguing the Obama Administration this month. I haven’t mentioned our deteriorating relations with Israel, Iran, Syria or record-high gas prices.
The media have probably kept 30 career-making Pulitzer Prizes’ on the table in ignoring them. But, don’t sigh for them my friends. Their zeal for investigations and journalism will return when Romney takes the oath of office in January.

The other day I received my weekly missive from Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan, in which she informed me and the world that “the Romney campaign has to get turned around.” She added helpfully, “This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant ‘rolling calamity.'” The media loved this column and repeated it widely. Their goal is to depress the Republican vote. Noonan’s goal, apparently, is to get attention.
That is the advice I would give to the Noonans of the world: get off Romney’s back.
If our respectable friends want an enemy to attack, they should use their clout to hammer their pals in the shamelessly corrupt and complicit “mainstream” media. If they are looking for some game-changing topics, let me suggest a few and even supply the headlines:

To this point, lace curtain conservatives have conspired, wittingly or otherwise, to suppress any stories that might fray their genteel reputations. If Obama wins in November, those reputations won’t be worth having.

Since our founding, America has promoted personal responsibility, the dignity of work and the value of education. Those values made our nation the hope of the earth and our economy the envy of the world.
Efforts that promote hard work and personal responsibility over government dependency make America strong. When the economy is growing and Americans are working, everyone involved has a shared sense of achievement, not to mention the basic sense of pride that comes with the paycheck they earn.
However, over the past four years, those kinds of opportunities have been in short supply. We’re experiencing the worst recovery since the Great Depression. Unemployment has been above 8% for 43 straight months; 47 million Americans are on food stamps. Nearly one in six Americans now live in poverty.
Under President Obama, we have a stagnant economy that fosters government dependency. My policies will create a growing economy that fosters upward mobility.
Government has a role to play here. Right now, our nation’s citizens do need help from government. But it is a very different kind of help than what President Obama wants to provide.
My experience has taught me that government works best when it creates the space for individuals and families to pursue success and achieve great things. Economic freedom is the only force that has consistently succeeded in creating sustained prosperity and lifting people out of poverty. It is why our economy rose to rival those of the world’s leading powers — and has long since surpassed them all.
The dreamers and the entrepreneurs, not government, built this economy, and they can once again make it strong.
My course for the American economy will encourage private investment and personal freedom. Instead of creating a web of dependency, I will pursue policies that grow our economy and lift Americans out of poverty.
My five-point plan will deliver the economic recovery we’ve all been waiting for and the jobs millions of Americans still need. This can be more than our hope; it can be our future. And it can start this November with your vote.

Income tax rates are another area of contention that exposes the split between the left and right.
Under the Obama plan, those couples earning more than $250,000 a year would see their rate move back to 39.6% after the expiration this Dec. 31 of the Bush-era tax cuts that lowered it to 35%.
Romney calls for setting the highest tax rate at 25% and the lowest at 8%, down two percentage points from the current level. Ryan’s plan offers a clear choice when compared to Obama’s. He calls for creating two tax rates, 10% and 25%, to replace the six that currently exist.
Tax preferences are another matter. The Republicans would pay for lowering ordinary tax rates by eliminating certain deductions and credits. However, they have not said which of these would be targeted.
The Democrats call for a cap of 28% on itemized deductions as well as on health insurance provided by employers, municipal interest, retirement plan contributions and student loan deductions and expenses for higher education.
Biden is such an IDIOT. Delaware must be proud.
There is no more time for games, no room for hurt feelings. Ron Paul fans, you need to choose, because not voting for Romney is a vote for Obama. It’s that simple. And you could make the difference.
Maybe Romney isn’t the uncompromising Ayn Rand hero you’d design if you could build your ideal candidate from scratch, but he’s a lot better than the guy on whose watch this happened:
Making no choice in this election is a choice – it’s a choice for a collectivist who will get two or three Supreme Court picks over a man who picked a guy, Paul Ryan, who understands capitalism and its unbreakable link to human freedom.
Now, this is a two-way street. Romney and Ryan need to reach out to libertarians over their common ground. Fortunately, there is lots of common ground.
No, the Republican Party is not a libertarian party, but it is the only party with any libertarian element. It’s the only place you have any chance of being heard. And with guys like Rand Paul and the libertarian-friendly Tea Party elements, you can be in the GOP.
Sure, the Democrats posture as guardians of freedom on a couple of issues – abortion, gay marriage – but that’s just a pose. It’s not part of any philosophy of human freedom; these are one-off policy choices made not because of a love for the Constitution but because they are demanded by the interest groups Democrats need to win elections.
When freedom becomes inconvenient, Democrats drop it like it’s hot.
You can say a lot about libertarians, but they are principled about their view of the Constitution. They don’t compromise, and in many cases they earn the respect of conservatives (though never, ever, of Democrats).
It’s hard to count how many times conservatives have watched GOP debates and muttered “Damn, I’d vote for Ron Paul if he’d just stop talking about foreign policy.”
There’s overlap with the Republicans but there is none with the Democrats. And that’s not surprising. Libertarians believe in principles of liberty, as they see them. Liberals believe in raw power to impose their will as they see fit.
Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, and Virgil Goode do not stand for collectivism. But right now, they stand in the way of stopping collectivism.
Let’s not sugar-coat it – there are some real differences between libertarians and conservatives. Foreign policy comes to mind; we conservatives see libertarian foreign policy as naive, while libertarians see conservative foreign policy as overseas adventurism. The drug war is another difference of opinion, though one the libertarians would have a hearing on in the GOP as their influence grows. We don’t need to agree on everything.
With the Democrats, you agree on nothing. We all saw the Democrat convention. It was a collectivist congregation worshiping at the altar of big government. Free this, free that, bailouts this, bailouts that.
There was no there there for principled libertarians. Nothing.
The Republicans are not libertarians, but at least libertarian-conservatives make up an influential and growing part of the party. There are exactly zero “libertarian-liberals.” Nor can there be; Democrats embrace everything libertarians oppose.
That’s why it’s silly to dismiss Romany as no different than Obama. Some wave off their obligation to choose with a cliché, that Romney is just “the lesser of two evils.”
Even if that’s true, the key is “lesser.” If you have to choose between encountering a hubcap thief and an axe murderer, you’d be a fool to shrug your shoulders and risk some face time with the dude with the hatchet.
This is no time to “make a statement” or pout that Ron Paul got treated badly in Tampa. He did get treated badly in Tampa, and that was stupid and unnecessary. But if you are truly dedicated to the Constitution you won’t let it be trampled in order to make some soon-to-be-moot point to the anonymous GOP party hacks responsible for not giving Ron Paul a primo speaking slot.
Priorities, people. Nothing less than the Constitution is at stake here.
No choice is a choice, and with the polls showing a dead-even race every vote that does not go to Romney is effectively a vote for Obama. There’s no debate here; you opt out and you support Obama by default. How can any principled libertarian do that?
Obama’s spent nearly four years trampling the First Amendment. Filmmakers who embarrassed the regime are rousted by cops at 1:30 a.m. Administration diplomats work with the UN to put in place blasphemy laws that give foreign mobs veto power over our right to speak. Religious organizations are told they must act contrary to their conscience as commanded by the government.
The Second Amendment is under fire and is just one Supreme Court vote from being snatched away. Our government sends guns to Mexican criminals in order to justify further crack-downs on American citizens.
At this rate, pretty soon the Administration will trash the Third Amendment and be quartering troops in citizens’ homes to save money that it’ll then redistribute to its cronies.
Romney’s not your dream candidate. We get that. He’s not most of ours either. But the inescapable fact – whether you like it or not, whether it’s fair or not – is that either he or Obama will be the next president.
Don’t be the guy in 20 years who looks over his shoulder to make sure no policemen are listening and then says to his kids, “Back in 2012, I was mad because Ron Paul lost and then got disrespected. I loved the Constitution, but I was mad, and so I let the guy who hated the Constitution win. I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry.”
The Romney-Ryan camp needs to do its part too; they need to reaffirm their commitment to Constitutional liberty. Freedom needs to be part of the conversation, not just Obama’s appalling record. While they can’t undo the gratuitous insults at the convention, they can make their case to the possibly decisive libertarians.
Ron Paul guys, Gary Johnson guys, Virgil Goode guys… the Constitution needs you. It needs you now. It needs you to put hard, hurt feelings aside and help elect the only one of the two candidates who has any chance of moving America in the direction you want.
Support and vote for Mitt Romney, or help Obama complete his transformation of America into a nation that violates every principle you claim you embrace.
It’s time to choose.

You won’t hear any of this in the media, no doubt, but in Chicago’s diplomatic circles at least there is no doubt that Chris Stevens was gay and that pretty much anyone in the diplomatic world knew that. That includes the Libyans who were hired as security at the consulate in Benghazi who betrayed Ambassador Stevens and assisted in his murder.
Which raises the question of why Hillary Clinton and the State Department would make him America’s ambassador in a viciously anti-gay Muslim environment. Kyle Rogers writing for Examiner.com explains:
Hillary Clinton has been spending US taxpayer dollars to fund homosexual pride events in foreign countries. Her actions have prompted backlashes against the US in Italy, Russia, Pakistan, and other nations. Last year, Barack Obama made it official US policy to fund homosexual rights groups overseas with US tax-dollars.
In Pakistan, the staff of the US embassy in Islamabad was placed in serious danger after being ordered to host a homosexual pride event. Pakistanis rioted outside the embassy and burned American flags.
Friends of Christopher Stevens in Chicago say he was gay. A member of the Serbian diplomatic team based in Chicago told HillBuzz.org that the State Department knowingly sent a gay man to be the ambassador of Libya. HillBuzz.org reports ”in Chicago’s diplomatic circles at least there is no doubt that Chris Stevens was gay.”
The question is, did Hillary Clinton know this? If so, she knowingly sent him into an environment where his presence would be considered a provocation. Hillary Clinton’s track record in North Africa is absolutely dismal. The US State Department has successfully turned Libya and Egypt upside down and placed militant Islam in charge of those nations. . . .
According to leading Arab media outlets, the murder of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens was even more horrible than what was reported in on the US media. The Arab media reports that Stevens was beaten, gang raped, killed, and then his body was publicly displayed in a manner similar to Gaddafi.

The Serbian consulate employee identified himself to me as “Dino” and wouldn’t give me any more of a name than that, but told me it was no secret that Chris Stevens was gay and that “it was stupid to send him to Libya as the ambassador when he was a known homosexual”.
Dino explained in great detail that the brutal sodomizing of Stevens’ corpse was something that Muslims do to show the “utmost disrespect to the body” and that this is “a great insult in Islam” reserved for homosexuals. ”It is like making him a woman in death and he will be a woman now after life” the Serbian explained to me. There’s a good chance this guy was Muslim too, and gay, which makes my head spin more than a little since he seemed to have no anger at all in his voice that Muslims in Libya assassinated the American ambassador and then sodomized his corpse.
“He should not have gone there” was the general consensus from this man.

Scott Pelley asks GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney how he plans to turn his campaign around following a dip in his poll numbers. Romney says that he doesn’t need a turnaround as his campaign is effective.
The Republican presidential candidate talked with Scott Pelley in a 60 Minutes interview. A transcript of the excerpt follows:
Scott Pelley: You are slipping in the polls at this moment. A lot of Republicans are concerned about this campaign. You bill yourself as a turnaround artist. How are you going to turn this campaign around?
Mitt Romney: Well, actually, we’re tied in the polls. We’re all within the margin of error. We bounce around — week to week– day to day. There are some days we’re up. There are some days we’re down. We go forward with my message, that this is a time to reinvigorate the American economy, not by expanding government and raising taxes on people, but instead by making sure government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation and gets the private sector hiring again.
Scott Pelley: Governor, I appreciate your message very much. But that wasn’t precisely the question. You’re the CEO of this campaign. A lot of Republicans would like to know, a lot of your donors would like to know, how do you turn this thing around? You’ve got a little more than six weeks. What do you do?
Mitt Romney: Well, it doesn’t need a turnaround. We’ve got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States.
Scott Pelley: Well– as you know, a lot of people were concerned about the video of the fundraiser in which you talked about the 47 percent of the American people who don’t pay taxes. Peggy Noonan, a very well-known conservative columnist, said that it was an example of this campaign being incompetent. And I wonder if any of that criticism gets through to you and whether you’re concerned about it at all, whether–

Nevada Republican to Harry Reid: Make our day, release your 2011 tax return!

Should Sen. Democratic leader Harry Reid follow in the footsteps of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney by releasing his 2011 tax return?
Dave Buell, chairman of the Washoe Country Republican party in Mr. Reid’s political backyard of Nevada, certainly thinks so.
“Senator, make our day and release your 2011 tax return,” he said in an email blast Friday evening.
Citing an anonymous source, Mr. Reid has repeatedly claimed in recent weeks that Mr. Romney “didn’t pay taxes for 10 years.”
Mr. Romney countered that over the past ten years he never paid less than 13 percent of his taxable income and that “Harry Reid’s charge is totally false.”
Shortly after Mr. Romney released the additional tax information, Mr. Buell blasted out the email calling for Mr. Reid to come clean and release his tax records “so that all Nevadans can see that he is paying his fair share.” He added, “In addition, Mr. Reid should explain to all of us how he became a millionaire on a bureaucrat’s salary. Mitt Romney earned his money by investing in companies, people and creating jobs in the private sector while Harry Reid made his money by taking money from the private sector and redistributing it through government.”
Mr. Buell also pointed out that Nevada has had the highest unemployment rate in the country.

The evidence suggests that Romney not only had nothing to hide, but had been more than generous with his money.
Tax returns for 2011 set to be released today by Mitt and Ann Romney reveal that they gave away a higher percentage of their income to others than did Barack and Michelle Obama, when both taxes and charity are taken into account.
The full returns, along with a notarized letter from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), the Romney’s tax preparer, giving a summary of tax rates from the Romneys’ tax returns for the 20-year period of 1990-2009, will be released at 3 p.m. eastern time.
In 2011, the Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity, which was 30% of their income. The Romneys also paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 in income, which is an effective 2011 tax rate of 14.1%. In total, they gave 44.1% of their income to others.
In 2011, the Obamas paid $162,000 in income tax in 2011. They donated $172,000 to charity. Their effective tax rate was 20.5% and they gave roughly 22% of their income to charity, which means the Obamas gave about 42.% of their income to others.
Thus, when voluntary and involuntary contributions are both taken into account, the Romneys are more generous than the Obamas–not just in absolute terms but also in percentage terms.
The Romney campaign will also release details of 20 years worth of tax returns. Over the entire 20-year period, according to the campaign, the Romney’s average annual effective federal tax rate was 20.20% and the Romneys gave, on average, 13.45% of their adjusted gross income to charity.
The Obama campaign and the mainstream media have hounded Romney to release his tax returns, with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even accusing Romney of paying no taxes at all.
The evidence suggests that Romney not only had nothing to hide, but had been more than generous with his money.

Mitt Romney has seized on President Barack Obama’s statement that he ‘can’t change Washington from the inside by telling him: ‘He can only change it from outside? Well, we’re going to give him a chance in November. He’s going outside!’
Speaking at a rally in Sarasota, Florida, Romney reacted swiftly to Obama’s comment in a Univision television forum: ‘The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside.’
Capitol Hill-The Department of Justice [DOJ] Inspector General [IG] Michael Horowitz testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform committee Thursday and answered questions about his recently released report [OIG] from his office about Operation Fast and Furious.
The internal investigation into Operation Fast and Furious has been going on for 18 months.
In his opening remarks, Chairman Darrell Issa said the IG report and its findings are huge steps toward restoring the faith of the American people in the DOJ, but that the Committee’s work “is not done yet.” “Operation Fast and Furious is a poster child for what you don’t do with deadly weapons,” Issa said. “Only the tragic lost of U.S. Border Agent Brian A. Terry brought an end to Fast and Furious.”
THE MISSING LINKS
“We did not get internal communications from the White House” Horowitz said during the hearing adding, “Mr. O’Reilly’s refusal to speak to us made it impossible,” to get answers about White House involvement.
According to the report, Horowitz was told “the White House is beyond the purview of the Inspector General’s Office, which has jurisdiction over Department of Justice programs and personnel.”
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano did not make Immigration and Customs Agent Layne France, a co-case agent on Fast and Furious, available to Horowitz, and declined the his request to be interviewed.
At this point, Congress still has not received 74,000 documents requested through subpoenas, something Horowitz found unnecessary and said documents relevant to his investigation should be made available for Congress to review.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
Another conflict of interest getting lost with the release of the OIG report, is the fact Horowitz wasn’t the IG in charge of the bulk of the internal Fast and Furious investigation.
“I wasn’t here for the first 13 months,” Horowitz said.
Horowitz became the IG after Cynthia Schnedar quietly left her post as the DOJ IG in March 2012. Schnedar is a long time personal friend of Attorney General Eric Holder and worked for him during his time as the U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C.
FALLOUT AND CONSEQUENCES
Resignations have already started. Yesterday Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein submitted his resignation and former ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson “retired.” Both Weinstein and Melson are part of 14 officials referred by name for discipline in the OIG report. Issa called for the resignation of the 14 officials held responsible in the report.
Although Horowitz referred 14 officials for discipline, he noted in his testimony, “It’s up to the AG to decide what discipline is taken.”
HOLDER VINDICATED?
Despite Attorney General Eric Holder’s victory lap yesterday, celebrating that the IG report didn’t hold him responsible for the majority of Fast and Furious, he isn’t off the hook and hasn’t been “vindicated,” as many in the mainstream media have tried to portray. When asked directly if Holder was “vindicated by the report,” Horowitz refused to say yes.
“Finally, the report exonerates ATF whistleblowers who stepped forward to allege and end serious wrongdoing. I hope the Department will finally recognize these brave men for their contributions and your office acts aggressively to hold those who tried to intimidate them to account,” Issa said. “Are you pursuing criminal investigations into whistleblower retaliations?” Issa asked.
Horowitz agreed and applauded whistleblower courage of coming forward to expose wrongdoing within the department. He also said his office was looking into cases of whistleblower retaliation and taking them very seriously.
Rep. President Obama’s executive privilege over Fast and Furious documents after February 4, 2011 still stands. Chairman Issa made it clear today this “isn’t over” and the lawsuit challenging the executive privilege will move forward. Issa did say he hopes there will be more cooperation in the coming days in order to avoid a court battle over Holder’s civil contempt citations, which was a result of his refusal to turn over documents requested through Congressional subpoenas.
In the end, we still don’t have the answer to one simple question: Who came up with the idea for Fast and Furious?

Eric Holder claims that the just-released Office of Inspector General report on Operation Fast and Furious vindicates his claims that he knew nothing about this reckless operation. He seems oblivious to the fact that the almost-500-page report is a damning indictment of his lack of leadership, supervision, and judgment.
Holder supposedly knew nothing about (and his senior leadership failed to alert him to) a major investigation that resulted in the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent, hundreds of deaths in Mexico, and more than 2,000 weapons’ ending up in the hands of criminals there. It is a chilling comment on how badly the Justice Department is run today. As the attorney general, essentially the CEO of the Department of Justice, Holder is directly responsible for what the inspector general calls a “series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment, and management failures that permeated ATF Headquarters and the Phoenix Field Division, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.”
In the report, the IG says he has “identified individuals ranging from line agents and prosecutors in Phoenix and Tucson to senior ATF officials in Washington, D.C., who bore a share of responsibility for ATF’s knowing failure . . . to interdict firearms illegally destined for Mexico, and for doing so without adequately taking into account the danger to public safety that flowed from this risky strategy.” He also found “failures by [DOJ] officials related to these matters, including failing to respond accurately to a Congressional inquiry about them.” The adjectives used in the IG report to describe the conduct and supervision of Operation Fast and Furious range from “significantly flawed” to “irresponsible.”

Alpha Natural Resources announced Tuesday its plan to cut the positions and scale back coal production by 16 million tons annually — which would result in eight mine closings in Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Four-hundred workers will be laid off immediately, though the company reportedly may try to re-hire some of the 1,200.
Kevin Crutchfield, the company’s chief executive officer, said the lay-offs and the closings of the non-union mines are the result a difficult market in which power plants are switching to abundant, less-expensive natural gas and “a regulatory environment that’s aggressively aimed at constraining the use of coal.”
However, elected officials and business groups have been less oblique in their analysis, saying Alpha employees are victims of President Obama’s so-called “War on Coal.”
The Mitt Romney campaign is among the most recent to put the blame squarely on the president, releasing a TV ad Wednesday that reminds voters about what Obama said in 2008.
“If somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can, it’s just that it will bankrupt them,” the president said, in a quote interpreted by critics as a campaign promise that coal would have no future in an Obama White House.

In this case, the best defense is a good offense, so Romney mentioned the newly (and not coincidentally) released Obama “redistribution” audio within the first 30 seconds of his very first answer — then revisited it a second time later. He’s also smart to make clear that when he decries an expanding dependent class, he’s not talking about members of the military or seniors who have paid into federal retirement benefits for their entire lives. The deeper problems Romney identifies are (a) too many Americans are unemployed and underemployed, and (b) President Obama’s policies are actively and deliberately enabling a bigger, more bloated, more intrusive federal government that makes ever-larger promises, even as the nation’s coffers run dry. He goes hard after the food stamps statistics to illustrate his point; as I wrote yesterday, there’s a veritable buffet of additional examples he might also use. The money quote of the segment comes near the end when Romney addresses the idea that he’s written off nearly half the country — not just from an electoral standpoint, but based on some deeper lack of concern about their well-being:
“One hundred percent of Americans, in my view, will do much better if we have a government that lives by the model established by the founding fathers, and that was one based upon freedom and opportunity.”
In essence, even the “Julias” of the world will benefit from a thriving, free society built on opportunity — even if they aren’t inclined to vote for it. Over the course of the conversation, Romney deftly managed to avoid getting bogged down untangling the minutiae of his overly broad and unfair characterizations of “the 47 percent.” He instead steered the focus to jobs, deficits and the size, scope and role of the federal government. This is terrain where the fight can be won. Conservatives were hoping Romney would turn this news cycle-altering leaked clip into an opportunity to prosecute an ideological case against the president’s policies. Based on his press conference Monday night and his chat on Fox last evening, it appears he’s prepared to do just that — at least long enough to weather the storm and forge ahead to whatever plans his campaign had in store before Mother Jones dropped this tape they’ve apparently been sitting on for four months.

As Election Day draws nearer, the Obama campaign and its surrogates in the Fourth Estate have infested the political arena with an army of tactical and rhetorical rodentia. One week, it’s GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney’s high school hijinks. The next, it’s a heinous smear about Romney killing a steelworker’s cancer-stricken wife.
Or, it’s a hit job on multiple sclerosis survivor Ann Romney’s therapeutic horse. Then, it’s faux-rage over Romney’s firm statement condemning the feckless White House response to the murders of our U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi.
This week, it’s a “secret Romney video” shot undercover at a closed-door dinner with Florida donors in May. Unemployed Democratic operative James Carter IV (grandson of former president and malaise engineer Jimmy Carter) brokered the film to progressive Mother Jones magazine.
Now, the same media lapdogs who had conniption fits when the late Andrew Breitbart and conservative investigative journalist James O’Keefe used undercover video are tripping over themselves to publish glowing profiles of Carter the Fourth and his impressive “furtive efforts” to secure the Romney tapes.
Carter the Fourth found the cameraman on Twitter, invoked his family name, and convinced the mole to leak the tape to Mother Jones’s David Corn. To quote Joe Biden with all due sarcasm: BFD.
But back to the bigger Big, Fluffy Distraction at hand: Let’s reflect for a moment on the Beltway hoo-hah over one small snippet from Romney’s nearly hour-long talk. Here’s the quote that has liberal finger-waggers and Republican wet-finger-in-the-wind windbags in meltdown mode:
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney explained to an audience member who asked how the candidate was going to change the “we’ll take care of you” mentality of Obama voters. “All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it…And they will vote for this president no matter what.”
Romney went out to explain that this portion of voters was comprised of “people who pay no income tax…I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
He’s talking, of course, about the Peggy the Moochers and Henrietta Hugheses of the world – savior-based Obama supporters for whom the cult of personality trumps all else. He’s talking about the Sandra Flukes and Julias of the world – Nanny State grievance-mongers who have been spoon-fed identity politics and victim Olympics from preschool through grad school and beyond. And he’s talking about the encrusted entitlement clientele who range from the Section 8 housing mob in Atlanta that caused a near-riot to the irresponsible debt-ridden homeowners who mortgaged themselves into oblivion and want their bailout now, now, now.
Media wonks sliced and diced the words like Hibachi chefs on bath salts. Beltway conservative scribes David Brooks and Bill Kristol denounced Romney as insensitive and out-of-touch. But Romney told hard political truths, which he’s proclaimed openly on the campaign trail before. “If you’re looking for free stuff you don’t have to pay for, vote for the other guy,” he told a heckler in March. “That’s what he’s all about, okay? That’s not, that’s not what I’m about.”
Gasp! He said he’s against freeloaders. Oh, the inhumanity.
In another section of the video that libs don’t want to talk about, Romney received his biggest applause when he defended his success and mentioned what Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio’s Cuban immigrant parents taught him. “When he grew up here poor, they looked at people who had a lot of wealth. His parents never once said, ‘We need some of what they have. They should give us some.’ Instead, they said ‘If we work hard and go to school, someday we might be able to have that.’”
Let the parsers and panicky pundits chase their tails and hurl their nuts. This election is about America’s makers versus America’s takers. Romney should never, ever apologize for making that clear.

Conservative author and writer Mark Steyn appeared on Monday’s broadcast of FOX News “Hannity” to discuss the trail of a movie that some are claiming to be the source of outrage in the Middle East.
“It’s got nothing to do with the video and there’s always a video; there’s always a cartoon; there’s always a teddy bear; there’s always some pretext for the mob to go crazy,” Steyn told Hannity.
Steyn said it the amount of law enforcement that was sent to retrieve the filmmaker compared to the amount of security around the murdered U.S. ambassador to Libya was “absolutely disgraceful.”
“And it’s absolutely disgraceful the site that you just showed here, of those guys, those armed guys, going at midnight on a weekend to take this filmmaker in for questioning. You know, if the ambassador in Benghazi had that level of armed force, he’d still be alive today,” Steyn said.
“He and Mrs. Clinton have chosen to blame this obscure video. Now that’s misdirection. It’s nothing to do with that,” Steyn also said.
Steyn said if the film on YouTube angered Secretary of State Clinton and President Obama so much and they want to be critics, then they should write a movie review.
“They’re shouting death to America,” Steyn said on Hannity. “There’s no qualification there. Death to America. Which of those three words doesn’t the United States government understand? Death to or America? What they’re doing is absolutely going to endanger the lives of Americans because they’re actually confirming the mob’s thesis that the government is responsible for the content of the movie.”
“I went through this big battle up in Canada. And I said then that I wasn’t interested in the Canadian government officials’ views of my book when they attempted to criminalize my book. If they want to write a book review, they can write it for the Literary Review of Canada. If Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama want to be film critics, they can get a job with Variety. But the United States government should not be taking a position on this film or this filmmaker because they’re endangering the lives of other Americans when they do it,” he concluded.
“American Apparel, the Selma, Ala., based military clothing manufacturer closed one of its plants and continues to downsize others due to the loss of some of its contracts to FPI. According retired Air Force colonel and spokesman Kurt Wilson, the company laid off 255 employees and cut the hours of 190 employees this year alone. So private workers end up losing their jobs to prisoners.
“The way the law is – Federal Prison Industries gets first dibs and contracts up to a certain percentage before they have to compete against us,” Wilson, the executive vice president of business development and government affairs, said. “The army combat uniform, for instance, is an item that they take off the top. As a result American tax payers pay more for it – but the bottom line is each soldier is paying more for their uniform.”
“American Apparel charges $29.44 per uniform, but the FPI uniform costs $34.18 – a 15 percent difference.
“FPI has been around since the 1930s. It provides training, education and employment for inmates in federal custody. With more than 13,000 inmates, FPI operates in about 80 factories across the United States. The company is not allowed to sell its goods to the private sector — and the law requires federal agencies to buy its products, even if they are not the cheapest.

“FPI’s percentage has remained fairly consistent over the past decade, with slight declines. FPI is a program that directly protects society by reducing crime and preparing inmates for successful release back into society to become law-abiding citizens; FPI does not receive a congressional appropriation for its operations,” the statement said.

Romney and Ryan need to go full throttle from now until election day! No let up! And no acknowledgement of the lamestream media all-for-certain criticisms and name-calling. They need to reply to the lamestream press by saying, “that’s a clown question, bro!” and move on to the next question and say, “that’s a non-issue,” and move on to the next question and continue to take the conversation back to the failing U.S. economy, and the disastrous foreign policy apology results of this administration. With tensions rising abroad, President Obama has argued that Mr. Romney and his younger running mate lack the chops to deal with the subtleties of foreign affairs. Democrats and some Republicans have said Mr. Romney of spoke out of turn when he accused the Obama administration late Tuesday of sympathizing with foreign protesters. But Mr. Romney’s blunt criticisms of the current administration went over well with this crowd. As Mr. Ryan was introduced, Bill Bennett, the conservative commentator and radio host, read Mr. Romney’s much discussed statement in full, earning a standing ovation. “The press jumped on to kill this truth in the womb, something it is well-practiced at,” Mr. Bennett said of Mr. Romney’s words. Still, the Republican vice presidential candidate spent much of his remarks touching on a variety of issues that resonate with the GOP’s base — from the repeal of Democrats’ health care law to the authority of the Constitution to perceived slights against Christianity by the Obama administration. (Yes!! Keep talking & hammering on these points!!)

Researcher says Babylonian reference dates to 2 millennia before Muhammad
A research article posted on the website of terrorist-turned-Christian Walid Shoebat contends the oldest known references to the Islamic deity Allah are not in Arabian records but in Babylonian artifacts.
Ancient tablets describe “Alla” as a deity of “violence and revolution.”
In his heavily footnoted project, he writes that historians have suggested Islam’s beginnings are found in the Persian religion Zoroastrianism, while others, including Christian writers, argue Allah was a moon-god in Babylon.
The younger Shoebat, who already has published several books, said previously the oldest known reference to “Allah” was in northern and southern Arabia about the fifth century B.C., according to Kenneth J. Thomas.
The new find, however, links the name to the Epic of Atrahasis, chiseled on tablets sometime around 1700 B.C. in Babylon.
“The beginning of the Epic of Atrahasis describes Allah as how all of the gods labored endlessly in grueling work, under the rule of the patron deity Enlil or Elil. But soon revolt of the gods had erupted, and one deity of ‘violence and revolution’ [was] named Allah (spelled by the experts as Alla),” he wrote.
Walid Shoebat said he believes this is the first time the connection has been made.
Ted Shoebat said one of the early such references in the Epic of Atrahasis states: “Then Alla made his voice heard and spoke to the gods his brothers,’ Come! Let us carry Elil, the counselor of gods, the warrior from his dwelling.”
The younger Shoebat, whose first book was “In Satan’s Footsteps,” grew up in Northern California, where he witnessed Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.
Ted Shoebat explained that no one had found any ancient pre-Islamic inscriptions that describe Allah being “worshiped purely, without idolatrous connotations.”
“The question remains as to why no expert on Assyriology or Sumerology had even suspected that ‘Alla’ had a connection with the Arabian ‘Allah,’” he wrote. “I checked the work of Thorkild Jacobsen, a foremost authority on Mesopotamian history and the dictionary of the translator, Stephanie Dally, and none make a connection between the Bablylonian ‘Alla’ and the Arabian ‘Allah.’
“Allah of the Babylonian Epic of Atrahasis was most likely kept hidden by researchers who feared controversy or even concealed the find,” he wrote. “In the epic Allah, which translators spelled ‘Alla’ (really pronounced the same way), was never even linked by any of the experts on Assyriology or any of the translators who wrote on the subject to the known Allah of Arabia and Islam.
“To those who accuse me of basing my conclusion, that Alla is Allah, on solely prejudice against Islam, I will present further evidence for my belief. It must be known to the reader that the author of the Atrahasis epic was one Ipiq-Aya who lived under the reign of the Old Babylonian king Ammi-Saduqa, and that he wrote it in the Akkadian language (the tongue of the Old Babylonian kingdom),” Ted Shoebat explained. “The ‘Akkadians’ it must be noted did not originally spring from Iraq, but had migrated from south Arabia, specifically Yemen, into Mesopotamia, where south Arabian inscriptions have been discovered, as in Kuwait on the Arab shores of the Persian gulf close to the borders of Iraq. The deities of Shamash (the Sun), and Ashdar/ Athtar (Venus) were both brought by the Akkadians from South Arabia into Mesopotamia.
“Athtar was originally a male deity of Venus for the Akkadian Arabs, but because when they had settled into Mesopotamia, they had equated Athtar with the Sumerian goddess of Venus Inanna, and would become the Babylonian Ishtar. This Athtar was also identified with the Arabian Allat, the female consort of Allah who was so revered by the Mesopotamians that they had called her Um-Uruk, or ‘the mother of the town of Erech,’ an infamous city of ancient Iraq,” he continued, “Since Allat was the feminine root of Allah, and was worshiped in Mesopotamia, and equal to the Sumerian Inanna, since they were both Venus goddesses, we should be able to find Allah associated with this goddess, based on inscriptions. In fact, we do, a Sumerian verse which directly identifies ‘Alla’ with the bridegroom of Inanna, Dumuzi or Tammuz who was an ancient deified king who once ruled the city-state of Erech, or Uruk, as the fourth king of its First Dynasty.”
He said it appears “Alla” “is an ancestral deity who was worshiped in Mesopotamia.” The writings from the time talk about Allah’s death, he explained.
“By the testimony of the Sumerians, it is clear that this Alla, or Tammuz, was once an infamous king of Erech, to only be deified by the superstitious masses of Mesopotamia.”

So, on a highly symbolic date, mobs storm American diplomatic facilities and drag the corpse of a U.S. ambassador through the streets. Then the president flies to Vegas for a fundraiser. No, no, a novelist would say; that’s too pat, too neat in its symbolic contrast. Make it Cleveland, or Des Moines.
The president is surrounded by delirious fanbois and fangurls screaming “We love you,” too drunk on his celebrity to understand this is the first photo-op in the aftermath of a national humiliation. No, no, a filmmaker would say; too crass, too blunt. Make them sober, middle-aged midwesterners, shocked at first, but then quiet and respectful.
The president is too lazy and cocksure to have learned any prepared remarks or mastered the appropriate tone, notwithstanding that a government that spends more money than any government in the history of the planet has ever spent can surely provide him with both a speechwriting team and a quiet corner on his private wide-bodied jet to consider what might be fitting for the occasion. So instead he sloughs off the words, bloodless and unfelt: “And obviously our hearts are broken . . . ” Yeah, it’s totally obvious.
And he’s even more drunk on his celebrity than the fanbois, so in his slapdashery he winds up comparing the sacrifice of a diplomat lynched by a pack of savages with the enthusiasm of his own campaign bobbysoxers. No, no, says the Broadway director; that’s too crude, too ham-fisted. How about the crowd is cheering and distracted, but he’s the president, he understands the gravity of the hour, and he’s the greatest orator of his generation, so he’s thought about what he’s going to say, and it takes a few moments but his words are so moving that they still the cheers of the fanbois, and at the end there’s complete silence and a few muffled sobs, and even in party-town they understand the sacrifice and loss of their compatriots on the other side of the world.
But no, that would be an utterly fantastical America. In the real America, the president is too busy to attend the security briefing on the morning after a national debacle, but he does have time to do Letterman and appear on a hip-hop radio show hosted by “The Pimp with a Limp.” In the real State Department, the U.S. embassy in Cairo is guarded by Marines with no ammunition, but they do enjoy the soft-power muscle of a Foreign Service officer, one Lloyd Schwartz, tweeting frenziedly into cyberspace (including a whole chain directed at my own Twitter handle, for some reason) about how America deplores insensitive people who are so insensitively insensitive that they don’t respectfully respect all religions equally respectfully and sensitively, even as the raging mob is pouring through the gates.
When it comes to a flailing, blundering superpower, I am generally wary of ascribing to malevolence what is more often sheer stupidity and incompetence. For example, we’re told that, because the consulate in Benghazi was designated as an “interim facility,” it did not warrant the level of security and protection that, say, an embassy in Scandinavia would have. This seems all too plausible — that security decisions are made not by individual human judgment but according to whichever rule-book sub-clause at the Federal Agency of Bureaucratic Facilities Regulation it happens to fall under. However, the very next day the embassy in Yemen, which is a permanent facility, was also overrun, as was the embassy in Tunisia the day after. Look, these are tough crowds, as the president might say at Caesar’s Palace. But we spend more money on these joints than anybody else, and they’re as easy to overrun as the Belgian consulate.
As I say, I’m inclined to be generous, and put some of this down to the natural torpor and ineptitude of government. But Hillary Clinton and General Martin Dempsey are guilty of something worse, in the secretary of state’s weirdly obsessive remarks about an obscure film supposedly disrespectful of Mohammed and the chairman of the joint chiefs’ telephone call to a private citizen asking him if he could please ease up on the old Islamophobia.
Forget the free-speech arguments. In this case, as Secretary Clinton and General Dempsey well know, the film has even less to do with anything than did the Danish cartoons or the schoolteacher’s teddy bear or any of the other innumerable grievances of Islam. The 400-strong assault force in Benghazi showed up with RPGs and mortars: That’s not a spontaneous movie protest; that’s an act of war, and better planned and executed than the dying superpower’s response to it. Secretary Clinton and General Dempsey are, to put it mildly, misleading the American people when they suggest otherwise.
One can understand why they might do this, given the fiasco in Libya. The men who organized this attack knew the ambassador would be at the consulate in Benghazi rather than at the embassy in Tripoli. How did that happen? They knew when he had been moved from the consulate to a “safe house,” and switched their attentions accordingly. How did that happen? The United States government lost track of its ambassador for ten hours. How did that happen? Perhaps, when they’ve investigated Mitt Romney’s press release for another three or four weeks, the court eunuchs of the American media might like to look into some of these fascinating questions, instead of leaving the only interesting reporting on an American story to the foreign press.
For whatever reason, Secretary Clinton chose to double down on misleading the American people. “Libyans carried Chris’s body to the hospital,” said Mrs. Clinton. That’s one way of putting it. The photographs at the Arab TV network al-Mayadeen show Chris Stevens’s body being dragged through the streets, while the locals take souvenir photographs on their cell phones. A man in a red striped shirt photographs the dead-eyed ambassador from above; another immediately behind his head moves the splayed arm and holds his cell-phone camera an inch from the ambassador’s nose. Some years ago, I had occasion to assist in moving the body of a dead man: We did not stop to take photographs en route. Even allowing for cultural differences, this looks less like “carrying Chris’s body to the hospital” and more like barbarians gleefully feasting on the spoils of savagery.
In a rare appearance on a non-showbiz outlet, President Obama, winging it on Telemundo, told his host that Egypt was neither an ally nor an enemy. I can understand why it can be difficult to figure out, but here’s an easy way to tell: Bernard Lewis, the great scholar of Islam, said some years ago that America risked being seen as harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend. At the Benghazi consulate, the looters stole “sensitive” papers revealing the names of Libyans who’ve cooperated with the United States. Oh, well. As the president would say, obviously our hearts are with you.
Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the local doctor who fingered bin Laden to the Americans sits in jail. In other words, while America’s clod vice president staggers around pimping limply that only Obama had the guts to take the toughest decision anyone’s ever had to take, the poor schlub who actually did have the guts, who actually took the tough decision in a part of the world where taking tough decisions can get you killed, languishes in a cell because Washington would not lift a finger to help him.
Like I said, no novelist would contrast Chris Stevens on the streets of Benghazi and Barack Obama on stage in Vegas. Too crude, too telling, too devastating.
German Paper: ‘Obama’s Middle East Policy Is in Ruins’
While the U.S. media focuses on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s reaction to the attacks on American embassies across the Middle East, the international media has focused its attention on the actual president, Barack Obama.

First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by a Virginia YMCA yesterday where she met with elementary and middle school kids. The kids had tough questions for the first lady, including the whereabouts of the president of the United States. She did not immediately know.

Asked where he was, she said, “he’s at work,” then asked the adults, “Where is Barack Obama?” She was told he’s in Colorado today.
When asked by a kid where the Obamas would live if President Obama loses, “The First Lady said they could figure that out later,” according to the pool report.
