I was in my office in Washington DC. We could see smoke billowing up from the Pentagon. Couldn’t get on the Internet to check the news websites because most sites (CNN, FOXNEWS, etc.) had crashed due to high demand) so we had TVs on. Some coworkers were crying, and others were leaving in a panic to pick their kids up, meet spouses, etc. but streets were gridlocked. The sense was to leave in a hurry, but go where? Home?? I realized I’d be safer in my office where I knew I had electricity, water, plumbing, F-14s flying overhead … so I stayed in my office until 3pm that day. When I left DC was a ghost town. There were armored tanks that had been positioned on several street corners in case there were subsequent attacks. I remember it feeling like a Mad Max movie set … but all very very quiet and surreal with an apocalypse-like quality.
