Scott Pelley asks GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney how he plans to turn his campaign around following a dip in his poll numbers. Romney says that he doesn’t need a turnaround as his campaign is effective.
The Republican presidential candidate talked with Scott Pelley in a 60 Minutes interview. A transcript of the excerpt follows:
Scott Pelley: You are slipping in the polls at this moment. A lot of Republicans are concerned about this campaign. You bill yourself as a turnaround artist. How are you going to turn this campaign around?
Mitt Romney: Well, actually, we’re tied in the polls. We’re all within the margin of error. We bounce around — week to week– day to day. There are some days we’re up. There are some days we’re down. We go forward with my message, that this is a time to reinvigorate the American economy, not by expanding government and raising taxes on people, but instead by making sure government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation and gets the private sector hiring again.
Scott Pelley: Governor, I appreciate your message very much. But that wasn’t precisely the question. You’re the CEO of this campaign. A lot of Republicans would like to know, a lot of your donors would like to know, how do you turn this thing around? You’ve got a little more than six weeks. What do you do?
Mitt Romney: Well, it doesn’t need a turnaround. We’ve got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States.
Scott Pelley: Well– as you know, a lot of people were concerned about the video of the fundraiser in which you talked about the 47 percent of the American people who don’t pay taxes. Peggy Noonan, a very well-known conservative columnist, said that it was an example of this campaign being incompetent. And I wonder if any of that criticism gets through to you and whether you’re concerned about it at all, whether–
Mitt Romney: Well, that’s not–
Scott Pelley: –the concerns of Republicans–
Mitt Romney: That’s not…that’s not the campaign. That was me, right? I– that’s not a campaign.
Scott Pelley: You are the campaign–
Mitt Romney: I’ve got a very effective campaign. It’s doing a very good job. But not everything I say is elegant. And I want to make it very clear, I want to help 100 percent of the American people.
IGNORE ALL! ALL! ALL! POLLS!!! Mitt is up a solid 5 at least by any even measurement standard… that said he stiil needs to stay on the offense! and attack Obamacon record daily.. He also needs to be very aggressive – professional & serious in the debates! has to repeat what he did to Newt in FLA… also the critiques from Conserv’s are good as they keep him sharp just like when he had primary challengers doing it.. again, IGNORE ALL POLLS!! Mitt is winning………
Peggy Noonan, Laura Ingrahma, Michael Savage, Bill Kristol, Ed Rollins, and other inside-the-beltway Washington elitists need to knock it off. Can’t they see they are doing more harm than good in their criticisms and name-calling of Governor Romney? Especially at this late date! They’re giving aid and comfort to the 0bama campaign. Who do they think they are?! If they’re so brilliant and if they know the precise wording of what Romney should say all day everyday when they pull their Monday-morning quarterback commentaries, then why aren’t THEY out there running for President of the United States?! Governor Romney appears to be more intelligent than all of these so-called conservatives combined. It’s become very clear that these people are only out for ratings for themselves.
Scott Pelley, CBS and the rest of the lamestream media conspire to report on Romney. All week NBC, ABC, and CBS (tv and radio) have been saying he needs to “turn around” his campaign.
Pelley, “eyeball to eyeball” with Romney asked what he was going to do to “turn around” his campaign. Romney told Pelley that Obama and he are basically TIED in the polls and that his campaign does not need a “turn around.” But Pelley INSISTED that Romney did not answer his question and told Romney that his campaign “NEEDED A TURN AROUND.” Romney repeated his answer.
The interesting thing was THE EXPRESSION ON ROMNEY’S FACE. I haven’t seen that look since George Stephanopolous asked Romney “Why do you want to take away women’s birth control?” As you may recall the lamestream media had “already decided” to report that Romney wanted to take away women’s birth control so it made no difference what Romney answered. Using polite words, Romney told Stephanopolous “what the hell are you talking about.”
So now the “latest theme” by ABC, NBC, and CBS is “your campaign is in disarray” while, of course, Obama has everything running smoothly – EXCEPT for the economy, foreign policy, the unemployment numbers, gas prices, etc…, but of course the lamestream media doesn’t notice any of that. Move along, nothing to see here…!
