“The bonuses come from lawmakers’ annual allowance for staff, travel, office space, supplies, travel and other office expenses. Unspent funds are held for a period of time and then returned to the U.S. Treasury.
“Harris’ balance as of Friday was $171,772, according to spokesman Ryan Nawrocki. There may be more bills to pay, but Nawrocki said he is confident the office will return “well in excess” of $100,000 to the Treasury.
“Mikulski returned more than $320,000 — or more than 10 percent of her budget — in fiscal year 2011 and more than $416,000 in fiscal year 2010, MacKnight said.
“Cardin now has $130,000 in unspent office money, but that could drop below $100,000 when all the bills are paid, Walitsky said.”
