Romney was right about Russian foe

by on August 14, 2013

“Around the world, the very people who scoffed at Mitt Romney are now calling for a boycott of the Olympics, a drastic move that the United States last implemented in 1980, at the height of the Cold War, when the Summer Games were held in the Soviet Union — a move that was widely criticized and mocked by the left at the time.

“Putin is openly mocking America,” Stuart Stevens, Romney’s chief campaign strategist, told me when I asked him what he thought of the administration’s learning curve on Russia.

“Last Friday, Obama conceded that there has been “more rhetoric on the Russia side that was anti-American, that played into some of the old stereotypes about the Cold War contests between the United States and Russia.”

“This was a telling remark from the candidate whose very presence in the White House, his partisans assured us, would lead to an across-the-board calming in global political tensions.

And it was a welcome intimation that perhaps Romney, derided only a year ago as an out-of-touch saber-rattler, was right about Russia all along.”
