GM Hopes to Trim $10,000 From Volt Production Costs
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. LET ME KNOW WHEN IT’S NO LONGER A P-O-S. MAYBE PEOPLE WILL BE INTERESTED IN IT THEN.
“One of General Motors’ goals with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt is to cut $7000-$10,000 in production costs per car, compared to the current model. GM boss Dan Akerson shared that goal during an interview with Bloomberg this week and added the cut in production costs won’t equate to a reduction in content.
“Every new technology takes a while to get traction, you’ve got to work out all of the associated issues,” Akerson said.
“As previously reported, GM loses money on every Volt produced. Not surprisingly, the Volt, which currently carries an MSRP of $39,995 (including the $850 destination fee), continues to be a source of controversy mostly due to its high production costs and GM’s struggles at meeting sales goals. Perhaps the most controversial media reportcame from a Reuters article published last year, which suggested that GM loses up to $49,000 on every Volt produced. GM responded and said the math was “grossly wrong” and acknowledged that the Volt will take “longer to become profitable” than a normal car.”

Big deal … so you still have an overpriced car that you still have to take to the gas station, but you also have to plug it in, successfully merging the worst of both worlds. At least with a pure electric you don’t have to get gas, and you have the simplicity of the drivetrain. At least with a non-plug-in hybrid you don’t have to plug the thing in at night. Oh but not on the Volt! You get hybrid gas mileage, plug in hassle, complexity of having both batteries and internal combustion on board, you still have to buy gas, and suffer the humiliation of driving a bailout-on-wheels.
the Obama heated seat cushions are a nice feature to keep ass warm.. and when they catch fire & light you up it really feels good…
