Romney Accepts Obama’s Invitation To Dine at White House Thursday

by on November 29, 2012

The White House said Wednesday that former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will have lunch with President Obama,  their first meeting since the president’s hard-fought re-election.

“On Thursday, Governor Romney will have a private lunch at the White House with President Obama in the Private Dining Room,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney wrote in a statement.  “It will be the first opportunity they have had to visit since the election,” Carney said. “There will be no press coverage of the meeting.”

President Obama said at a press conference on Nov. 15 that he hoped to meet with his political foe. “I’m sure that Governor Romney is spending some time with his family,” he said, just a week after the election. “And my hope is, before the end of the year, though, that we have a chance to — to sit down and talk.”

Obama hinted that he would be open to Romney’s ideas.  “There are certain aspects of Governor Romney’s record and his ideas that I think could be very helpful,” he said. “And well, to give you one example, I do think he did a terrific job running the Olympics. And you know, that skill set of trying to figure out how do we make something work better applies to the federal government.”  “He presented some ideas during the course of the campaign that I actually agree with,” Obama said.
