Abandoned Vintage Vehicles Found On Public Lands

by on March 28, 2012
A once shapely 1956 Mercury Persimmon and White hardtop blends in well with its surroundings on a Big Piney Ranger District acquired land parcel not far from a state highway. The serial number plate is still in place and shows it was made in St. Louis. Latitude: S35°40.951’; Longitude: W092°51.030’.

For those of you who wonder why cars get left behind – it just happens. We had a few acres of land in rural georgia in the 70’s and one summer parked our older car in the garden shed so we could get all our outside furniture in the garage. (Pontiac Fury 3). The short drive went over a shallow drainage ditch. There was a storm that summer and 1 tree came through the carport and another one came on the other side of the drainage. The upstream creek also turned so the ditch was turned into a 3 foot deep canyon. At this point we figured we would take our time to get it out but about 6 month later we got the insurance payment for total cost and the insurance company did not want to retrieve it. Over time several trees grew over 50 yards and the creek changed back so the ditch became shallow again but with new big rocks in the way.

I visited our house in what is now suburban Atlanta a few years back. The front of the lot was an apartment building and the back had been bought by the city as a watershed. The car was still there and full of beer cans. I can imagine if someone saw it there is no way they could figure out how the car ended up there. Its in very thick bush, the apartment complex took away the gentle gradient and created a 5 foot retaining wall. And there are literally 20-30 giant trees in the way.
