She spoke movingly about their early years–about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out” and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale–however well-delivered–was one great, big, colorful lie…
Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School. They had expensive tastes, reflected in the $277,500 two-bedroom condo they bought in 1993–a high price even by today’s standards. Several years later, they moved into their $1.65 million mansion in Hyde Park–with the help of fraudster Tony Rezko. Barack often told a story of hardship on the campaign trail in 2008 about having his credit card declined–once. The fact that he thought this counted as real hardship speaks volumes. As First Lady, Michelle Obama has lived high on the hog while the rest of the country has suffered through an extraordinary recession. In 2010, she and her entourage decamped to Spain for a lavish vacation. That summer, the Obamas encouraged Americans to visit the Gulf coast after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which threatened tourism in the region. They promptly jetted off to Maine for their own summer holiday. This summer, the Obamas skipped their usual summer trip to the wealthy playground of Martha’s Vineyard–months after Michelle and her daughters had enjoyed an expensive winter skiing trip in Aspen. And, of course, there are the frequent pilgrimages to Hawaii, Some of their family’s comfort, of course, comes from private income, principally Barack Obama’s book sales–yet even that wealth is a spin-off of Obama’s political career. |

“Somebody got into the basement, this is a full basement and I was on the bed fixing to go to bed,” Jones told WPCO. “And I’m very sensitive, I was in the military, you have to have good ears. And I heard something just as I sat down, ‘clonk, clonk, clonk,‘ and I said well somebody is in the basement and he’s going to come upstairs. So I heard him when he was coming up the steps, I had the gun so I was sitting there when he opened the door.”
“As soon as he got inside, it was all over,” the veteran added.
Jones told officials that Monday morning’s incident was the third time his home has been broken into, WPCO reports. He said Monday morning’s incident should serve as a warning to any future robbers who want to target him.
“I’ve been robbed so much in the past five weeks, I said it’s going to have to be a message to the people. The only way you going to stop this is you have to leave one laying in the grass. That‘s the only way you’re [going to] stop it,” Jones said.

The Smiths, who live in Princess Anne in Somerset County, were driving home with their two sons — Nathan, 27 months, and Parker, 8 months — after spending the weekend at Jones’ home in Sparrows Point when Jess Smith turned around to check on the boys in the back seat and noticed Nathan “was blue.”
“It was the most terrifying thing I ever had to go through,” she said.
The couple stopped their truck off southbound Route 50 and jumped out, thinking Nathan was choking on something. Brian Smith, a volunteer firefighter, held his son upside down and searched his airway, but couldn’t find anything, he said.
“I thought he wasn’t breathing at all,” Smith said. “I was losing my 2-year-old, that’s what it felt like. It felt like he was already dead in my arms.”
Soon after, Harris and his family, who had been spending time at their Cambridge home, were driving northbound on Route 50 after taking a detour around flooded areas when Harris saw three cars stopped on the other side of the road with their doors open.
“It looked a little strange because there was no damage to any of their cars,” said Harris, a father of five and an anesthesiologist who works at Memorial Hospital at Easton. Then he noticed Nathan on a blanket on the ground behind one of the cars, and turned his car around.
Harris said he knew the boy needed air, and turned him on his side and loosened his jaw to open his airway. At that point, the boy gasped, he said. An ambulance then arrived and took over the medical care of the boy.
Doctors at Memorial Hospital told the family Nathan had a viral infection that caused the rapid onset of a fever, which in turn caused the boy to have a seizure and stop breathing, Brian Smith said. But with medical care, Nathan was soon better, his mother said.
“Within a couple hours he was back to his regular self, eating and drinking and running around,” she said.

The Obama campaign rolled out the red carpet this week for a former top Energy Department official who was at the center of the ill-fated government loan to Solyndra, a California solar panel firm that wound up in bankruptcy.
Steven J. Spinner joined other top fundraisers for a VIP tour of the Democratic National Convention floor in Charlotte Monday evening, posing and waving for a photographer while standing behind the podium. When he saw ABC News cameras, however, he ran for the exit.

Lame as ever by these two media clowns…maybe next time they shouldn’t try so overtly hard for a “gotcha moment.”
As is well known, Republican politicians and pundits frequently use words like “European,” “Chicago,” “golf,” “skinny,” “angry,” and “welfare” to subtly remind voters that President Obama is black. This leads people who would otherwise support President Obama to oppose him. Perhaps the best example came during the Republican presidential primary, when Rick Perry described the national debt as a “big black cloud” hanging over America. More recently, a Romney aide called attention to the president’s race by referencing America’s “Anglo-Saxon heritage.”
But in his acceptance speech at last week’s Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney went even further, delivering a shockingly racist address. Below I will enumerate some examples (follow along with the transcript here):
“Mr. Chairman”: This is a reference to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. Just two years ago, Priebus replaced Michael Steele, an African-American, as RNC chairman. By mentioning the current RNC chairman, Romney is reminding voters that Priebus is not Steele, and therefore not black, which reminds voters that Romney is not Obama, and therefore not black.
“delegates”: Next, Romney mentions the convention delegates, a reminder that most of the delegates are white (unlike Obama).
“I”: The word “I” reminds people of themselves. Racists, upon hearing the word “I,” are reminded of who they are — which reminds them that they are white, which reminds them that Obama is not. Critics may claim that Romney is talking about himself here rather than about the listeners — but Romney, too, is white, so a word like “I,” urging voters to focus on Romney, also reminds them that he is white and Obama is black. The shape of the word “I” also recalls a tall, thin person, and, as mentioned earlier, “skinny” is a well-established racist dog whistle.
“accept”: This word sounds just like the word “except,” which evokes the idea of exclusivity. Blacks are excluded from white-only country clubs.
“your”: Like “I,” this word asks voters to think about who they are — i.e., white.
“with”: Any word that means “together” is a call for white racists to stick together against the black outsider.
“humility”: Another reference to a foreign band, Humble Pie (again, British), who were known for their cover of the song “Black Coffee.”
“deeply”: Everybody knows the phrase “Beauty is only skin deep.” Therefore, the word “deep” is associated with the word “skin,” which reminds people of Obama’s skin color.
“moved”: This word asks racists to recall how upset they are over black people moving into their neighborhoods.
“by the”: When hearing these words, one immediately thinks of the song “Down by the Bay,” whose next words are “where the watermelons grow.” Here, Romney is evoking the stereotype of black people eating watermelons; it’s a very underhanded tactic.
“trust”: MSNBC recently proved that Republicans are trying to link Obama in voters’ minds to the philandering ways of Tiger Woods. The word “trust” is an overt and reprehensible callback to that theme.
“you”: See above.
“have”: The GOP caters to the haves while ignoring the have-nots. As with “welfare,” this word is strongly associated with the racial aspects of income inequality.
“placed”: The two most important flatfish in Europe, according to Wikipedia, are the plaice and the sole. Romney is asking Republicans to think of themselves as the former, while the latter is obviously meant to represent black people, as it recalls soul music (clearly intentional, given the musical theme of the speech established by the earlier references to two British bands and a children’s song).
“in me”: Continuing with the musical theme, this references the song “The Revolution in Me” from the rock group Black Country Communion. Though the band is American, its name is a clear shout-out to the so-called “birthers” in the audience. “Communion” is also reminiscent of church and the president’s former association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
I’m running out of space, but I think I’ve made it clear that Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech was full of racist dog whistles. There are simply too many of these code words in the speech for all of them to be unintentional. If you look hard enough, you’ll find even more examples in the rest of the speech. I know I did.

Republican nominee for Vice President Paul Ryan addressed a packed crowd today at East Carolina University Greenville, NC. He was standing more than two hundred miles east of the site where the Democratic National Convention is due to begin tomorrow, but they could hear him in Charlotte. His message was clear: America is no better off, and in many ways worse off, than it was when President Barack Obama came to office.

In another sign that Clint Eastwood’s RNC talk to an empty chair has tapped in to broadly held opinions that President Obama is not getting the job done, word spread rapidly over the weekend among conservative new media outlets that an impromptu “National Empty Chair Day” is being planned for Monday.

Tousrrential downpour that struck Charlotte Saturday afternoon damaged the Mount Rushmore-style sand sculpture bust of President Obama — an ominous beginning to what many fear is a plagued convention.
Workers were trying Saturday afternoon to reform the base of the sculpture, built from sand brought in from Myrtle Beach, S.C., pounding and smoothing out the sand that had washed off the facade of the waist-up rendering of the chief executive.
The sand sculpture was protected from above, and Mr. Obama’s face didn’t see too much damage. But the storm was so strong that its heavy winds blew the rain sideways, pelting the president’s right side and leaving the sand pockmarked and completely erasing his right elbow.
Democrats’ choice of Charlotte has drawn criticism from unions who don’t like North Carolina’s labor laws, and the state seems to be tilting away from Democrats politically.
The large Rushmore-style sculpture drew comparisons to Mr. Obama’s 2008 convention in Denver, when he accepted his party’s nomination on a stage that looked like a Greek temple.

Earlier today, I wrote about the apparent (but preliminary) vindication of the Clint Eastwood strategy, in terms of viewership and impact on voter choice. However, the cultural impact of Eastwood’s empty-chair routine might be the biggest gain for Republicans from his appearance. Paul Ryan had a brilliant line about college graduates being stuck in their childhood bedrooms, staring at “faded posters” of Barack Obama and Hope and Change. This cycle, we have the empty-chair Presidency, thanks to Eastwood, and Investors Business Daily’s Michael Ramirez puts his Pulitzer Prize-winning talents to expanding on that theme:

Eastwood highlighted the empty chair and the empty promises and policies that failed to lower both the sea level and the unemployment rate, stuck at more than 8% for 42 months, a post-Depression record. Meanwhile, President Obama jets to college campuses in the carbon-gushing Air Force One to prattle on about student loans to college students who won’t be able to find jobs.
Obama and his administration officials have made 435 taxpayer-funded visits to college campuses or other events targeting students since March 2011. Included have been 164 trips to battleground states, a new study shows, leaving him too busy to meet with his jobs council to find these kids work.
Eastwood’s empty chair reminds us of the poem by William Hughes Mearns that goes in part: “Last night I saw upon the stair, A little man who wasn’t there, He wasn’t there again today, Oh, how I wish he’d go away .. .”
Eastwood suggests that in November we can make our invisible president do just that.
About the only thing that Eastwood needed was to place an empty suit in that empty chair.

Fox News will re-broadcast last Friday’s Hannity special “The Hope and The Change,” featuring the new Citizens United documentary of the same title, this Friday and Saturday at 10 PM eastern.The special, featuring director Stephen K. Bannon, producer David Bossie, and consultant Pat Caddell, was the #1 program on cable news August 24th, with over 2.25 million viewers. In the 9 PM and 12 AM hours, the program’s ratings beat all other cable networks combined. “The tremendous response the film has received through the Hannity Special has been extraordinary,” said Bannon. “The Hope and The Change” is a documentary interviewing Democrats and independents who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 but have become disillusioned with his performance in office. Sean Hannity remarked that the film is the “most powerful documentary I’ve ever seen in my life – no way anyone who’s seen this film could vote for Obama.” The film was recently screened at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida and will also be shown this week at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. “We can’t wait to screen the film at the DNC next Thursday,” said Bossie. But we already knew that.For four long years we’ve waited, hoped and prayed that some young comic would break free of the politically correct demands of The State and mock Obama the way all presidents and all people in power should be mocked. But for four long years (with a few exceptions) all we’ve seen instead are cowardly toadies of The State: Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Chris Rock, the cast of “Saturday Night Live”… Since Obama won the presidency, comedy has pretty much gone straight to hell as our Entertainment Overlords morphed into pathetic lapdogs to The State; begging for scraps of attention and affection from Obama, and in the process becoming stale, lazy, dull, predictable, painfully unfunny, and like a needy poodle — more than a little annoying. Who would’ve ever thought that one of the men who would display enough backbone and “edge” to finally take it to Obama with wicked mockery on about 30 million live television screens would be 82 year-old Clint Eastwood? Once we learned Eastwood was the night’s mystery guest, no one knew what to expect. And anyone who took a guess most certainly didn’t guess that the Oscar-winning American icon would use his opportunity to relentlessly and hilariously mock Barack Obama in front of the entire free world. You can watch the highlights here: It was glorious! And everyone I’ve talked to who was in the hall absolutely loved it. Eastwood hit Obama in every sweet spot we’ve been waiting for him to get hit on: The incompetence; the lies; the empty, pretentious rhetoric; the inexperience; and that roaring blowhard of a moron Obama chose to be a heartbeat away. Oh, and the empty chair. Other than an empty suit, there is no sharper metaphor. Eastwood also made one of the very best points of the night: WE own this country, and when someone doesn’t do the job “we have to let them go.” The media, naturally, is furious. They don’t like to see Their Precious One mocked and they also understand the power of mockery — which is why they keep Stewart and Colbert on such a tight leash. This is why the media has already written 25 stories (5 from Politico) mocking Eastwood. Had Eastwood said the things the media likes to hear with the same nervousness and hesitation, they would’ve called him wizened and seasoned. But because he mocked Their Precious One, suddenly he’s some kind of embarrassment. And now Politico, Ben Smith and CNN are all talking about how they intend to use Eastwood as way to overwhelm Mitt Romney’s speech in the coming days. Like they wouldn’t have found another reason. All I can say in response is: Go to hell you Obama-shilling crybabies. Eastwood showed more grit and honestly in those few minutes than you water carriers have during your entire propaganda-for-the-collective careers. What Eastwood did tonight was funnier, fresher, edgier, and braver than anything those comedy cowards Chris Rock, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert have done in 15 years. 82 years-old, and Dirty Harry is still pissing all the right people off. A media fact-checker walks into a bar with a duck on his head.Bartender asks, “Can I help you?” Duck says, “Yeah, get this liar off my ass.” It’s official; the term “fact checker” is now a punchline. For four long years, I’ve waited for these disgracefully partisan left-wing fact checkers to implode, and this morning and last night it finally happened. And it happened under the weight of their own lies and shameless Obama-shilling. This was inevitable after Politifact claimed that Barack Obama’s increase in federal spending was lower than any modern president. No, really. This was inevitable when The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler called Romney a liar for saying a president who didn’t got to Israel didn’t go to Israel. No, really. This was inevitable because the lies and misdirection and partisan flacking was getting so desperate, a tipping point had to be in sight, and last night it finally tipped. Last night, before the applause had even died after VP nominee Paul Ryan’s masterful speech, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was calling Ryan a liar. Before the echoes of Ryan’s last words had even faded, Blitzer was telling America the fact-checkers would take issue with the speech. Within minutes afterwards, the lying, disgraced media fact-checkers dutifully followed suit with a flurry of lying, disgraced checking of Ryan’s facts. This was undoubtedly pre-planned and organized between Team Obama and his Media Palace Guards. Hilariously, even though Paul Ryan never blamed Obama for closing a GM plant in his hometown or said the closing occurred during the Obama administration, the fact-checkers said he did and that Ryan was a liar for saying so. What’s even more hilarious is that the GM plant did close down months after Obama took office. Keep in mind here, I’m not talking about left-wing sites. I’m talking about CNN, PolitiFact, The Washington Post… It is the mainstream media doing this. My guess is that Obama and the media set up this plan weeks ago. We’ve caught them red-handed conspiring in the past. After all, what better way to undermine and take the the air out a major candidate’s speech than to make the next day’s Narrative all about “The Lie”? And this is what the media’s been doing throughout the campaign, using lies and wild distractions to throw Team Romney off track in order to smother his message and keep him on defense. But in desperation, last night these left-wing water carriers disguised as fact-checkers made a couple of fatal mistakes. First off, it was achingly obvious what they were up to — that this wasn’t about journalism but rather an act of naked and desperate partisanship. Secondly, in their heated desperation to get this Narrative built, they overreached on the GM plant closing. And… Because Breitbart is everywhere, We The People said “enough.” It was like an explosion, really. On Twitter and at sites like Hot Air, NRO, Red State, and Townhall, the pushback was sharp, immediate, and in-your-face. This pushback started immediately after Ryan’s speech and 14 hours later it still rages. Other than Twitter, there are other high points: Guy Benson not only dismantled the fact checkers’ GM lies, he dismantled all the lies about Ryan’s speech the “fact-checkers” told last night. Jennifer Rubin went so far as to slam her own employer. Yes, this is a turning point. To his great credit, our nominee Mitt Romney was ahead of this curve in refusing to cave (as John McCain often did) to these Obama-worshipping propagandists. Drop dead, Romney told the media fact checkers, and he did so publicly. Never again will these left-wing hacks have an impact on American politics beyond being just another Democrat Talking Point Machine like every other “objective” media outlet. Never again will Republican candidates cower before these liars. This is huge loss for the corrupt media. And they know it. But they Kamikazee’d themselves for Obama and only have themselves to blame. Yep, the jig is up. The mask has been removed. Media fact-checkers lie, they’ve always lied, and now everyone is calling them liars. Today is a great day for truth and democracy. Since the start of the GOP convention on Tuesday, the legacy media have used every trick in their playbook to distort coverage of the Republican gathering. Sensing correctly that the GOP ticket is gathering momentum ahead of the final sprint to November, the media are explicitly trying to distort the Republican message going out to voters. A new poll by Wilson Research shows that the media’s political campaign against the GOP is having an impact.The poll of likely voters in 10 swing states was conducted Tuesday and Wednesday. Among voters watching the Republican National Convention itself, 67% of voters had a more favorable impression. However, among voters who are only watching the nightly news coverage of the RNC, 72% had a less favorable impression. It should be noted that the poll was conducted before Paul Ryan’s acceptance speech last night, so these results should be considered preliminary. That said, the difference between those who watched the convention and those who simply watched the news of the convention is striking. One caveat: those who are only watching the news coverage will tend to be more Democrat, or independent-leaning-Democrat, than the overall polling sample. That said, a 72% less favorable impression is far beyond this modest skew. Close observers of the media have seen their devolution into an active partisan interest group. They are not in Tampa to report the events of the convention. They are in Tampa to frame the GOP message for the general public and find disparate items that can be twisted together to paint an explicitly negative impression. “President Obama has never paid much attention to, nor cared much for, the founding fathers’ intent,” Bossie said in a phone interview. “So they want to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the First Amendment. That’s what this is.” “Citizens United is, pure and simple, a free speech case that the president and the left can’t handle because they can’t win the argument,” Bossie continued. “They can’t make their own political arguments and win them with the American people so they have to stifle speech. The conservative Susan B. Anthony List is poised to embark on a TV ad campaign challengingBarack Obama’s record on abortion, an official with the group tells POLITICO.
The initial ad is a $150,000 buy in Missouri, and shows a woman – Melissa Ohden – speaking to the camera about having been born alive in spite of an abortion procedure.
Abortion opponents have long decried Obama’s record in the Illinois legislature on regulating late-term abortions, but little money has been spent to advertise on the issue since he became president.
“Many children, more than you might think, actually survive failed abortions and are born alive. I know because I’m one of them,” Ohden says in the SBA List ad. “When he was in the Illinois state Senate, Barack Obama voted to deny basic constitutional protections for babies born alive from an abortion – not once, but four times.”
She concludes: “I know it’s by the grace of God I’m alive today, if only to ask America this question: is this the kind of leadership that will move us forward, that will discard the weakest among us? How will you answer?”
This really is bad news. One half of the country’s political system openly courting idolatry and praying to a false deity? If you have any respect for the founding of America and the Providential blessings which guided George Washington and others during the formation of our country, you will see this as an outright affront to our creation, our national honor, our very fabric of existence. How do you respectfully tell your usually character-driven parent that his decision to support Obama, no matter what, is rooted in racism and a refusal to forgive? But now that Obama has been exposed as the most anti-Christian president in U.S. history, senior black Christians must no longer be given a pass for supporting this man. At stake is something extremely important: their fellowship with Christ versus an idolatrous worship of skin color. Woe unto black pastors who encourage their flocks to vote racial loyalty over biblical principles. Ryan Zinke, the former Navy SEAL who started the super PAC, spoke exclusively with Breitbart News today. “The ad itself accurately portrays where this President is,” said Zinke. “It accurately portrays his core belief that America should not lead. This president is shaping America to be one of the followers, to relinquish our role as a world leader. I didn’t fight 23 years as a Navy SEAL to watch America bow to anybody.” He continued, “It’s not just the king of Saudi Arabia. My friends from WWII that fought in the Pacific theater — when they see the president bow to the emperor of Japan, I’ve seen veterans cry. This is about the fundamental belief in American exceptionalism, the notion that America should reign supreme. We are a country of values, and we fought hard to be exceptional, and we are.” When asked whether it was inappropriate for former SEALs to speak out, as some on the left have alleged, Zinke answered, “If the veterans can’t speak out, who can? I think it’s a duty of every veteran and every citizen to be actively involved in our political process, especially when the president sets out to negotiate away our rights under the Constitution. There have been other veterans — TR, Eisenhower, JFK — they’ve been active in speaking out and shaping the policy and politics of our country. I’m going to stand for what I believe in, and I’m encouraging every veteran and every citizen to do the same. Our country is at a crossroads, and this election is certainly the most important in my lifetime.” Last week, Breitbart News reported that President Obama had placed Special Operations for America on his so-called “enemies list.” Zinke responded, “I see that my name is on the ‘enemies list’ in the Obama campaign. This administration rules through intimidation and fear and misinformation as a form of distraction to what’s really important. And what’s really important is the values of our country — and a strong economy creates a strong military. “I’ve been trained hard to fight and not give up, and I’m not going to give in.” The fight truly begins tomorrow evening. TAMPA, Fla. — The “Unity Rally 2012,” convening the night before the Republican National Convention began, preached a form of unity that was less about uniting around a common idea or candidate than about uniting around a common enemy: President Barack Obama. The Sunday rally in Tampa’s River Church featured tea party figures including two of Mitt Romney’s formal primary rivals: pizza mogul Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. It was co-sponsored by TheTeaParty.net, Cain Solutions Revolution, the Western Representation PAC and other organizations. Some in the crowd did not seem entirely sold on their party’s nominee. Two holdouts stood outside the event holding a Newt Gingrich sign, and several cars sported Ron Paul stickers. As a measure of success of the movement, she pointed to the Republican Party’s convention platform. “The tea party is all over that platform,” she said. Romney’s representative at the rally, Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, an early endorser of the former Massachusetts governor, devoted his speech to touting Romney’s business prowess, his personal appeal and his success rescuing the Salt Lake City Olympics. But even Chaffetz set out the stakes of November’s election in stark terms. | Obamacare is an imminent threat to people with life-threatening medical conditions.
People with serious medical conditions often achieve miraculous results in the U.S. thanks to a private health care system that gives them the freedom to track down and go to doctors with the right knowledge and experience. These people, who have the greatest and most urgent health care needs, will be stymied by Obamacare’s new layers of bureaucracy. Instead of swiftly obtaining the right diagnosis and treatment, they will lose precious time submitting forms and filing appeals. As every physician knows, it’s important to arrive at a correct diagnosis as soon as possible because medical conditions are most treatable in their early stages. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal illustrates the point. “Facing Lifesaving Heart Surgery, Twice” bemoans the plight of people who had heart surgery as children only to experience further heart problems as adults. Doctors were often baffled because their hearts had been reconfigured during childhood. In some cases, the best course of action proved to be going back to the pediatric hospitals and surgeons who performed the original operations. This is possible in a private health care system because patients are correctly viewed as customers. Under Obamacare — a system that perceives people with serious medical conditions as financial burdens to a government already deeply in hock — these patients are more likely to find themselves boxed in by rules designed to contain costs. People with serious medical conditions quickly discover that there are three key components to effective medical care. The first is a timely and accurate diagnosis. Getting the right diagnosis may require not just a second opinion, but a third and a fourth. The second component is a complete list of treatment options. Multiple opinions and options require the free flow of information that only a competitive health care marketplace can deliver. The final component is the freedom for patients to choose what they judge to be the best course of treatment. Patients and their families are best qualified to make these decisions because they are the ones most directly affected. Under Obamacare, it’s presumed that government officials are better qualified to make these decisions, and it’s a safe bet that they will be instructed to weigh each patient’s anticipated future contributions to society against the long-term costs of keeping that patient alive. President Obama made it clear that this is exactly where we are headed when he said, “Maybe you are better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller.” He was doubtlessly thinking ahead to a time when the cost to government will take precedence over what’s best for the individual. Government-run health care is the most cold-hearted health care. For example, the U.K.’s National Health Service denies kidney dialysis to patients over the age of 55 just to save money. Another way that Obamacare will hurt people with life-threatening medical conditions is by stifling innovation. Today, the U.S. has more CT scanners, PET scanners and MRI machines than any other country. And as the country that pioneered implantable cardio-defibrillators, the heart-lung machine and robotic surgery, the U.S. offers more and better treatment options. Thanks to our private health care system, entrepreneurs are free to develop powerful new solutions, and if government ever gets out of the way they will be free to drive down costs. In stark contrast, public health care systems start by constraining costs; most innovative solutions never get off the launching pad. It’s understandable that people with life-threatening conditions are attracted to government programs such as Obamacare. Many of these people feel they have twice lost life’s lottery: first by having a medical condition they did not ask for, and second by being saddled with extraordinary health care expenses. Unfortunately, Obamacare provides only false security. Subsidized or even free care is of no value if it doesn’t provide the right diagnosis and the right treatment at the right time. Nor does it help to encumber hospitals, doctors and patients with massive new regulations. The only way to reduce the cost of health care while maintaining or improving quality is to permit and encourage vigorous competition. Give the patients who consume the most health care the freedom to shop for services and make their own buying decisions and they will help drive down prices for everyone else.
